Marriage agency Tokushima is a group of matchmakers who arrange meetings between Japanese men and women. They offer both online and offline services. Most of the clients are middle-aged or older men who are looking for a life partner. The matchmakers usually visit the client’s home, meet their families and discuss the terms of the marriage contract. They also provide advice to the couples.
Before World War II, arranged marriages were the norm in Japan, but now love marriages are more common. However, some people still use marriage agencies to find their soulmate. Some of them even pay thousands of dollars to the matchmakers. In addition to the admission fee, some agencies charge monthly membership fees and a marriage fee once a couple gets married.
In order to regulate the 結婚相談所 徳島 matchmaking industry, some academics and companies created Service Productivity & Innovation for Growth (SPRING), and set up a voluntary certification system. The certification guidelines require the matchmakers to disclose information such as service fees and refrain from making exaggerated advertisements. However, the guidelines don’t have any legal force. Thus, there is sufficient space for abusive matchmakers to exploit their clients, mainly Japanese men.
SPRING’s initial plan was to facilitate meetings between local Japanese men and Filipino brides who had been sent by their husbands from the Philippines and other countries in Asia. The matchmakers promoted their business through pamphlets distributed at municipal offices, agricultural co-operatives and community centres, emphasising the naivety and gentleness of the Asian brides. These campaigns targeted the eldest sons of farmers, workers with little education, men supporting or living with their elderly parents, multiple divorcees, and socially handicapped men.
After the success of the arranged marriages, SPRING expanded their activities to the western part of Honshu, especially to Okayama, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures. Various matchmaking apps are available in Japan, but most of them focus on meeting singles. In contrast, the majority of marriage agencies in Japan focus on matching pairs who have similar interests and lifestyles. Their clients include both Japanese and foreign men and women who are interested in long-term marriages.
Some of the agencies’ clients have Japanese parents who are against international marriages. In such cases, the marriage agency may suggest that their clients ask permission from their parents. In addition, the marriage agency may advise them on how to get along with their parents.
Getting married in Japan is relatively simple for UK citizens, as long as they comply with Japanese laws. A sworn Affidavit of Competency to Marry must be prepared before registration. This can be obtained in person from the British Embassy or from a consulate office in Japan. In addition to this, the client must present a Birth Certificate and other documentation when they register with a Japanese Marriage Agency. These documents are essential to prove the client’s identity and that they are legally free to marry. Having this proof makes it much easier to marry a Japanese citizen.
