From the prehistoric rock paintings in the caves of Altamira to the monumental sculptures in the awe-inspiring Alhambra, from the Roman aqueducts to the Gothic cathedrals of Barcelona and Burgos, from the Renaissance frescoes of Toledo to the modernist buildings of Seville, Madrid, Bilbao and Catalua, from the tradicionales verbenas to the flamenco dancers, from the aristocratic palaces to the humble ayuntamientos, the architecture of Spain reflects its diverse history.

From its Western origin to its interaction Cultura de España with other cultures throughout Europe, and its historically Catholic religious tradition, to the varied national and regional identities within the country, Spanish culture is a complex tapestry of customs, beliefs, institutions, and social norms. This is evident in its literary, musical, visual arts, cuisine as well as its contemporary customs, beliefs and behaviours.

A great number of museums, galleries, theatres, and other cultural venues showcase the rich heritage of the country as well as its latest artistic creations. In addition, a wide variety of festivals and events devoted to different sectors of culture take place throughout the year. These include prestigious international festivals of cinema, music, literature and dance as well as a host of other gastronomic, sporting, academic, historical and cultural activities.

In the field of education, there has also been significant progress. The abolition of the sex segregation in universities has helped to improve the quality of education and to foster greater respect for differences.

The family is a central aspect of Spanish society. This sense of community is reflected in the large amount of time Spaniards spend with their families, friends and coworkers. Moreover, the Spanish are known as one of the more liberal cultures in the world when it comes to accepting same-sex marriage and gay rights. In fact, the country was a pioneer in this area. The abolition of the prohibition on abortion has likewise contributed to making it a more open-minded and tolerant society. The country is a great place for both study and leisure, thanks to its high-quality education and the many cultural and sporting events it hosts. The country is also home to some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world.
