How to Say Goodbye in French

The French Connection is famous for its car chase sequences and its story of New York City narcotics detectives on the trail of international heroin smugglers, played by Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, and Fernando Rey. But the movie also has a more subtle, less flashy side to it. It's one of the few movies that features cops who aren't particularly likeable, especially the pushy, obnoxious lead character, Doyle. He uses the N-word a few times and even racially harasses the drug dealer who stabbed his partner, Cloudy.

In the movie, he's rude and condescending to his partner and he flies into a rage when Cloudy points out the flaw in his logic. But in real life, they continued to work together and solve other cases. The movie makes it seem as though the two men are on opposing sides of a tense police operation but they're actually working together to capture the smuggler.

The most common way to say hello in French is "bonjour." It literally translates as "good day" but it's used for much more than just that. You'll hear it when entering a store or meeting someone for the first time, and it's always a good idea to greet a stranger with this phrase.

Another common greeting in France is "coucou." This is more of an informal form of hello. It's used by children and among friends and family, and it can sometimes be heard in text messages. It's not a greeting you'd shout on the street but it can be a fun addition to your French vocabulary.

"Comment ca va?" is another great way to ask how someone is doing. It translates to "how are you?" or "how's it going?" It's often used in place of "hello" when talking to people you know well, but can be used in more formal situations as well.
