The French Connection tina
US singer Tina Turner has many links with France. She sang in many of the country’s iconic clubs and venues and was a star attraction at its festivals. She lived for some time in Villefranche-sur-Mer, where she became such a favourite with the locals that they even gave her an honorary citizenship at the start of her second term as mayor in 1995. Her mansion in the village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat was also a popular tourist destination. Ms Turner loved French cuisine and wine, and was a regular at the Chateau Lagrezette in Cahors (Centre-Val de Loire) where she took part in the annual harvests. The commune describes her as “an ambassador of the French culture” and says that she was a charming guest who left behind beautiful memories.
Ms Turner’s relationship with France also included a more painful chapter. She first talked about her abusive marriage to Ike Turner in a 1981 interview, which shocked many people. Her scorching account included details such as being made to watch a live sex show in a brothel, being hit with a shoe stretcher and being repeatedly beaten by the rock star. It was a brave act of courage to open up in such a way, and Ms Turner said she did so in order to expel some of the ghosts from her past.
The story of her domestic violence helped to change perceptions about abuse in the 1970s. Dr Lenore E Walker, director of the US-based Domestic Violence Institute, thinks that Ms Turner’s decision to speak out was hugely significant. “Women were not believed when they spoke out about abuse,” she tells the BBC, adding that Ms Turner’s words gave credibility to other women who wanted to do so.
The movie The french connection tina is famous for a high-octane car chase and its depiction of violent New York City police detectives on the trail of heroin dealers. It is based on true events, and Sonny Grosso, the real-life cop who led the raid that inspired the movie, died in January at the age of 89. The French Connection revolutionised the look and feel of police procedural movies, and much that is now cliche in these films was invented by this seminal work. Police chases and worn heels, a police dog sniffing through bags of cocaine: the film has everything that is now expected from a cop movie.
